About

A university shaped by its landscape

Jahangirnagar University sits on 697 acres of greenery in Savar, about 30 kilometres from central Dhaka. Walk the tree-lined paths or watch migratory birds settle on the campus lakes each winter and you'll see that sustainability here isn't an abstract concept, it's part of daily life.

Founded in 1970 as Bangladesh's first fully residential public university, JU has always been shaped by its relationship with the natural world. This site brings together the university's work across all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: teaching and research, campus policy, and community outreach.

A positive influence beyond its own walls

We believe a university should be a positive force not only within its walls but in the world beyond them. Our graduates should leave as people who make thoughtful decisions, act ethically, and feel a genuine responsibility toward others and the environment.

The most important questions on poverty, health, environment, equality and governance can't be answered by one field in isolation. So we bring departments and institutions together, and make sure our findings reach the communities and policymakers who can use them.

As a residential campus, JU is also a community. How we maintain our land, treat our people, feed our students and run our facilities should show the future we're working toward: equitable, environmentally responsible and inclusive.

Flagship programmes

Where the work happens

JU works with government agencies, NGOs and international partners on disaster risk, food security and water management, and is a member of SDSN Bangladesh, supporting national SDG implementation with research, data and expertise.

University-wide initiative

Clean Campus, Green Future

A realistic, everyday commitment to keeping the campus clean, reducing waste and protecting the natural spaces that define JU.

Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS

Remote Sensing and GIS

Satellite data and spatial analysis to track land use, map flood risk and monitor climate change, the applied work that lets communities plan ahead.

Department of Environmental Sciences

Environmental Sciences

Field research and community awareness programmes on climate action, life below water and life on land. Students here don't just study the environment, they walk out into it.

JUNCC, student-led

Nature Conservation Club

Biodiversity assessments, tree-planting drives, lake clean-ups and conservation seminars all year, and the lead voice on the wetlands during migratory bird season.

Department of Zoology

Bird Fair and Butterfly Fair

Recurring flagship events that bring students, researchers and the public together around the campus's wildlife, alongside a wildlife rescue centre and DNA barcoding lab.

Department of Anthropology

Anthropology and social advocacy

A place where academic rigour meets social advocacy, working so that women's perspectives are heard in the classroom, in research and in national debates on equality and rights.

At a glance

Where the work is happening

One bubble for each goal. The bigger the bubble, the more the university has on record for it. Drift right for more ongoing programmes and research, and up for more recent events and partnerships. Select a bubble to open the goal.

Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions has the most on record (11 focus areas, 11 events, 10 partner agreements). Zero Hunger has the least written up so far. These bubbles show what has been documented, not how much effort a goal receives, so a small one may just be a story that hasn’t been told yet.
