Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Jahangirnagar University contributes to SDG 16 through its institutional governance structures, student participation mechanisms, harassment complaint procedures, and research on law, democracy, and public administration. These activities provide a foundation for strengthening accountability, participation, and access to justice.

Institutional Governance

Jahangirnagar University’s governance structure includes the Senate, Syndicate, Academic Council, and Finance Committee. The university also publishes links to its Act, statutes, ordinances, and rules, providing access to documents relevant to institutional administration and decision-making.

Student Representation and Participation

Jahangirnagar University has a Central Students’ Union (JUCSU). Its official website publishes information concerning the 2025 JUCSU election, while election notices also refer to hall students’ unions. These structures provide formal avenues for student representation within university life.

Student Feedback and Complaint Mechanisms

The JUCSU Complaint and Advice Centre provides an online platform for students to submit concerns and suggestions. Its published features include an anonymous submission option and status tracking. These mechanisms can support student participation and make the handling of concerns more visible.

Addressing Sexual Harassment

Jahangirnagar University maintains an official webpage for its Sexual Harassment Complaints Committee, including information defining sexual harassment. This provides an institutional reference point for addressing harassment and supporting a safer university environment.

The Students Counselling and Guidance Centre also lists victim or survivor advocacy, crisis intervention, and psychotherapy among its services, offering support relevant to students experiencing distress.

Institutional Rules and Accountability

The university publishes a Disciplinary Ordinance for Students and provides access to other institutional regulations. These documents form part of its framework for conduct and administration.

Research on Governance and Public Institutions

The Department of Government and Politics identifies practical challenges and policy debates in politics, governance, and development as areas to which its research seeks to contribute. Faculty research interests include democracy, democratisation, legislative politics, and environmental justice.

Research on Local Governance

University-hosted journals publish research examining public administration, citizen service delivery, and local development. Examples include studies of Citizen’s Charter implementation and the selection of development projects by Upazila Parishads. Such scholarship contributes to understanding challenges to transparent and participatory governance.

Engagement with Government Institutions

Jahangirnagar University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Patents, Industrial Designs and Trademarks in June 2026.

Access to Academic Knowledge

The university’s Institutional Repository collects, preserves, and distributes theses, research reports, and other academic materials. This supports access to knowledge and enables wider engagement with university research.

Student Welfare and Inclusive Campus Life

The Students Counselling and Guidance Centre provides counselling, psychosocial support, skills development, and career guidance. These services complement participation and complaint mechanisms by helping students navigate personal and academic challenges.

    A committee submitted the proposed revised constitutions of JUCSU and hall students’ unions to the Vice-Chancellor.

  2. 31 January 2025

    The university announced an academic and administrative service automation roadmap.

  3. 17 January 2025

    A preliminary investigation report was submitted concerning attacks on students and teachers during July 2024.

  4. 15 January 2025

    A JUCSU Election Commission meeting proposed extending the final voter-list publication period by six working days to accommodate necessary additions and removals.

  5. 6 January 2025

    The university hosted a national dialogue on student politics reform, addressing DUCSU, JUCSU, CUCSU, RUCSU, and related student unions.

  1. 17 December 2024

    The administration announced its intention to publish a clear roadmap for the JUCSU election.

  2. 10 December 2024

    The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) participated in a Human Rights Day discussion organised by Savar Upazila Administration.

  3. 19 November 2024

    Professor Mohammad Tarikul Islam was recognised for appointment to the Local Government Reform Commission. Journalism and Media Studies student Md. Abdullah Al Mamun was recognised for nomination as a student representative to the Media Reform Commission.

    The university Photographic Society organised an exhibition on the July uprising.

    A rally was held against ragging, drugs, and overcrowded mass-room accommodation.
