Good Health and Well-being

Jahangirnagar University contributes to SDG 3 through health-related education and research, campus medical services, and student counselling. These activities connect academic learning with the physical and emotional well-being of the university community.

Education for the Health Workforce

Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Public Health and Informatics provides education relevant to public health practice and research. The department emphasises evidence-based research and teaching approaches that support the development and delivery of solutions to global health challenges.

The university also has departments in Pharmacy, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Together, these disciplines provide an academic foundation for pharmaceutical, biomedical, and health-related work.

Campus Healthcare Services

Jahangirnagar University maintains a Medical Centre with nursing services, medicine supply, and pathological laboratory testing. These facilities provide an institutional basis for supporting healthcare needs within the campus community.

Mental Health and Emotional Well-being

The Students Counselling and Guidance Centre supports students’ emotional well-being, personal growth, and academic development. Located in the Teacher-Student Centre, it provides a support system for students facing challenges in university life.

Its published services include individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, consultations, and victim or survivor advocacy. The centre also identifies World Mental Health Day observance, mental health workshops, and assistance with mental health concerns among its activities. These services contribute to a campus environment in which students can seek guidance and support.

Health Research and Knowledge Development

Jahangirnagar University researchers contribute to evidence on public health challenges. Published faculty research includes studies of anxiety and depressive symptoms among physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic, tobacco use, and the projected effects of smoking prevalence on life expectancy. These research areas are relevant to mental health, disease prevention, and population health planning.

Faculty work also includes research on the health effects of air pollution exposure, connecting environmental conditions with human well-being. Such research offers knowledge relevant to identifying health risks and developing preventive responses.

Health Awareness and Student Development

The Students Counselling and Guidance Centre combines psychosocial support with seminars, workshops, social activities, and guidance. This approach recognises that well-being involves emotional support, social connection, and the skills needed to navigate academic and personal challenges.

Through its health-related academic programmes, medical facilities, counselling services, and research, Jahangirnagar University contributes to the objectives of SDG 3.

2025

  1. 14 May 2025

    A free hepatitis B vaccination programme was inaugurated at Jahangirnagar University. It was organised by the university branch of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

  2. 5 February 2025

    The university completed its central annual sports competition, with participation from male and female residential halls.

  3. 1 February 2025

    Anandashala, the Special Needs Education Centre, organised its annual sports programme and picnic.

2024

  1. 8 December 2024

    Cheques totalling BDT 3,696,000 were handed over as medical assistance for people injured during the July–August uprising.

  2. 16 November 2024

    The Department of Philosophy organised a seminar titled “Let’s Talk about Mental Health.”

  3. 25 October 2024

    The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) visited injured students receiving treatment at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed in Savar and enquired about their treatment.

  4. 25 October 2024

    The university’s first two-day women’s football tournament began, organised by the Jahangirnagar University Women’s Sports Society.

  5. 15 October 2024

    The Jahangirnagar University Alumni Association of the United Kingdom donated BDT 100,000 to support injured university students.

  6. 6 October 2024

    A scientific seminar was held on the biology of probiotic bacteria, including lactic acid bacteria.
