Goal 14

Life Below Water

Jahangirnagar University contributes to SDG 14 through research and education on aquatic ecology, marine biodiversity, water pollution, and wastewater treatment. Its work on freshwater systems also provides knowledge relevant to understanding pollution pathways and protecting interconnected aquatic environments.

01

Education on Aquatic Ecosystems

Published Environmental Sciences teaching information includes Aquatic Ecology, Limnology and Oceanography, Hydrology and Water Resource Management, and Biomonitoring of Pollution. These subjects develop knowledge relevant to aquatic biodiversity, ecosystem processes, and responsible water management.

02

Fisheries and Aquatic Research Facilities

The Department of Zoology reports a fish hatchery complex among its research facilities. Faculty research also examines how fish respond to environmental stressors, including microplastics, wastewater, pesticides, and endocrine-disrupting compounds. This work provides evidence relevant to aquatic animal health and environmental protection.

03

Marine Biodiversity and Bioinvasion Research

Published faculty information identifies research on marine communities, marine bioinvasion, and the blue economy. These areas are relevant to understanding marine ecosystem functioning and the pressures associated with biological invasions and resource use.

04

Research on Aquatic Plastic Pollution

Jahangirnagar University researchers investigate microplastic contamination in aquatic ecosystems, including its presence in freshwater fish and potential implications for human health. Published research also examines microplastics in water, sediments, and aquatic organisms from the Pasur and Buriganga rivers. These studies contribute evidence for understanding plastic pollution and ecological risks.

05

Water Quality Assessment

Faculty publications include research on water quality and metal pollution in the Ganges River and on water characteristics and heavy metal contamination in the Sangu–Matamuhuri rivers. Such studies help identify pollution pressures and risks affecting aquatic environments.

06

Wastewater Treatment and Pollution Remediation

The Department of Environmental Sciences reports an Environmental Research and Testing Laboratory and a Water Research Centre focused on wastewater treatment. Its research areas include aquatic ecology, water pollution, environmental monitoring, phytoremediation, and pollution remediation.

Faculty work also includes wastewater treatment using aquatic plants. This research is relevant to developing approaches that reduce pollutants entering receiving waters.

07

Understanding Aquatic Biodiversity

Zoology faculty research includes aquatic ecology, the role of macroinvertebrates in ecosystem functioning, and biodiversity conservation using traditional and molecular methods. Research on the genetic diversity of mud crabs from the Bay of Bengal and adjacent seas further contributes to knowledge of aquatic species.

08

Sharing Environmental Knowledge

The Department of Environmental Sciences publishes the Jahangirnagar University Environmental Bulletin and the Bangladesh Journal of Environmental Research. These journals provide channels for sharing findings on regional and global environmental challenges, including water-related issues.

09

Campus Aquatic Stewardship

Research on the university’s campus wetlands highlights their importance as habitats for plants and animals. These findings can inform measures to protect water bodies, maintain surrounding vegetation, and assess the ecological effects of campus development.
