Sustainable Cities and Communities

Jahangirnagar University contributes to SDG 11 through education and research on urban planning, transport, housing, cultural heritage, and environmental conservation. Its residential facilities and campus ecosystems also provide opportunities to connect academic knowledge with sustainable campus development.

Cultural Education and Heritage

The university’s academic structure includes History, Archaeology, Drama and Dramatics, and Comparative Literature and Culture. These disciplines provide a foundation for studying cultural expression, historical knowledge, and heritage.

The published Archaeology course outline includes folklore, folk literature, songs, drama, dance, and musical instruments.

Library and Knowledge Access

Jahangirnagar University’s library provides access through its membership and identity-card arrangements. Its Institutional Repository also distributes theses, research reports, and other academic materials, supporting wider access to university knowledge.

Environmental Awareness and Public Engagement

The university’s recurring Bird Fair and Butterfly Fair provide platforms for biodiversity awareness. These activities connect conservation education with public engagement and encourage appreciation of the natural environment.

Campus Green Spaces and Wetlands

Published studies identify the ecological importance of campus wetlands, vegetation, and wildlife habitats. This evidence can inform decisions about protecting green spaces and balancing development with ecosystem conservation.

Sustainable Urban Planning

Faculty in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning work on sustainable planning, environmental governance, built environments, and climate-sensitive urban design. These research areas contribute knowledge relevant to creating more resilient and inclusive settlements.

Transport and Sustainable Mobility

Published faculty research addresses urban transport planning, road safety, and the integration of bus rapid transit with rickshaws to promote energy-efficient travel. This work provides evidence relevant to safer and more sustainable mobility in developing cities.

Research also examines young people’s participation in decisions about green spaces and public transport in Dhaka, linking urban planning with inclusion and community needs.

Jahangirnagar University lists residential halls within its institutional accommodation provision. These facilities support campus-based student living.

Housing Research

University faculty work includes research on land assembly for affordable housing and planning frameworks for housing development in Bangladesh. These studies contribute to understanding the institutional and spatial challenges of providing suitable housing.

Urban Resilience and Institutional Collaboration

Published faculty information records involvement in a JICA–JST-supported project concerning structural integrity in densely populated urban areas and resilient cities in Bangladesh. This demonstrates research engagement relevant to safer buildings and urban disaster resilience.

    Number plates and vests were distributed to campus rickshaw drivers.

    Following a student’s fatal battery-powered rickshaw accident, an investigation committee was formed and a case was filed at Ashulia Police Station.

  3. 19 October 2024

    Every incoming student in the 53rd batch received a residential hall seat, replacing the previous overcrowded “mass-room” arrangement for this intake.
