Sustainability at a university is not only about what happens on the grounds. It is also about what students learn and how they are taught. Jahangirnagar offers education across the arts and humanities, mathematical and physical sciences, social sciences, biological sciences, business studies and law, and sustainability now appears across that range.
In the curriculum
- Sustainable Development, Climate Resilient Development, and Environmental Science and Sustainability.
- Global Climate Change and Environment.
- Waste Management, and Environmental Laws, Treaties and Ethics.
- Hydrology and Water Resource Management, Aquatic Ecology, and Biomonitoring of Pollution.
Teaching the teachers
The Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) has been running a steady programme for staff. It organised a workshop on the progress of the outcome-based education (OBE) curriculum on 26 November 2024, a workshop for teachers on writing sub-project proposals on 9 January 2025, training on the online admissions software on 15 January 2025, and a three-day Teacher's Induction Program on Tools for Quality Improvement beginning 21 April 2025. An Intellectual Property Rights workshop for teachers followed on 28 April 2025.
Skills beyond the classroom
Students get practical training as well. The Institute of Information Technology ran "Digital Skill for Students" on 7 January 2025. The Wazed Miah Science Research Centre held training on FT-IR, UV–Vis spectroscopy and microscopy on 14 May 2025 and hosted "Cracking the Biology Omics & Your Future" on 28 April 2025. And the Students Counselling and Guidance Centre organises career-planning workshops and job fairs involving companies and NGOs, and shares information on UNDP's Futurenation skills and scholarship opportunities.
Open to everyone
Learning does not stop at the campus edge. JU's Institutional Repository collects, preserves and distributes theses, research project reports and other academic materials, and the university's agreement with Lincoln University College, Malaysia, creates a framework for joint education, exchanges, training and internships.
