Goal 15

Life on Land

Jahangirnagar University contributes to SDG 15 through biodiversity research, wildlife conservation, environmental education, and public awareness activities. Its campus vegetation and wetlands also provide opportunities to study ecosystems and understand the importance of habitat protection.

01

Public Awareness of Biodiversity Conservation

Jahangirnagar University’s Bird Fair and Butterfly Fair connect academic knowledge with public engagement. The Department of Zoology identifies these recurring events as part of its activities, while faculty information describes their role in raising conservation awareness among young people, researchers, and the wider public.

02

Wildlife Research and Conservation Facilities

The Department of Zoology reports facilities including a Wildlife Rescue Centre, an Insect Rearing and Research Centre supported by a DNA barcoding laboratory, and a fish hatchery complex. These facilities support animal science education and research relevant to biodiversity and conservation.

03

Understanding Campus Ecosystems

Research on Jahangirnagar University’s campus has examined vascular plant diversity and wildlife habitats. Published studies highlight the ecological importance of wetlands and identify dense vegetation and areas near water bodies as significant habitat locations. These findings provide evidence relevant to campus conservation planning.

04

Environmental Education for Communities

Published faculty information documents the development of the “Fun and Learn” environmental education programme for schoolchildren living in and around protected areas in Bangladesh. Supported by GIZ, the Forest Department, and the Arannayk Foundation, this initiative illustrates how conservation knowledge can reach communities beyond the university.

05

Species Assessment and Protection

Jahangirnagar University researchers have contributed to updating the Species Red List of Bangladesh and undertaken work on wildlife monitoring and conservation in protected areas. Documented examples include butterfly assessment, gharial conservation, and wildlife monitoring in Kaptai National Park.

06

Biodiversity Education

Published curricula include Biodiversity and Conservation in Botany and Biodiversity and Nature Conservation in Environmental Sciences. These subjects help students develop knowledge relevant to species protection, ecosystem management, and conservation practice.

07

Biodiversity Information and Knowledge Sharing

University faculty information documents the development of BioTrack, an open-access database on biodiversity in Bangladesh’s protected areas. Such resources support access to ecological information and provide a foundation for further research and conservation decisions.

08

Research on Invasive Species

Published Environmental Sciences faculty information identifies bioinvasion among its research areas. This expertise is relevant to understanding ecological risks associated with introduced species.

09

Partnerships for Conservation

Faculty engagement with the Forest Department, IUCN-related species assessments, development partners, and conservation organisations demonstrates connections between university expertise and wider biodiversity initiatives. These collaborations support research, environmental education, and species assessment.

10

Water Quality and Ecosystem Research

Jahangirnagar University reports an Environmental Research and Testing Laboratory and a Water Research Centre focused on wastewater treatment. Its listed research areas include limnology, biodiversity, and nature conservation, linking pollution research with ecosystem health.

11

Plastic Pollution and Waste Research

Published faculty work includes research on microplastic contamination, waste management, and pollution monitoring. These areas contribute knowledge relevant to reducing environmental pressures on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
