New halls, new rides: how everyday campus life is changing

New residential halls, gas connections and electric shuttles are changing where students live and how they get around Bangladesh's first fully residential public university.

As a fully residential university, Jahangirnagar's sustainability story is also a story about daily life: where students sleep, how they eat and how they get from a hall to a lecture.

Somewhere to live

On 15 July 2024 the keys to two newly built halls, Bir Protik Taramon Bibi Hall and Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall, were handed over, and Taramon Bibi Hall, a women's residential hall, formally began operations on 16 October 2024. A few days later, on 19 October, the university reported that every incoming student of the 53rd batch had received a hall seat, replacing the overcrowded "mass-room" arrangement for that intake. A rally on 20 October spoke out against ragging, drugs and the mass-room system.

Powering the new halls

On 24 May 2025 the process of providing gas connections to six newly constructed residential halls began, with engineers from Titas Gas inspecting the halls and conducting the necessary surveys.

Cleaner ways to get around

  • 13 April 2025: a lithium-ion battery-powered shuttle bus service was inaugurated.
  • 22 April 2025: an electric vehicle shuttle service operated by Maa Enterprise was inaugurated.
  • 31 December 2024: the Estate Section distributed number plates and vests to campus rickshaw drivers, which helps with identification and safety.

Research at the university looks at the same questions on a bigger canvas, including work on urban transport planning, road safety and combining bus rapid transit with rickshaws for more energy-efficient travel. The campus, in a small way, is its own test case.
